Trade and Remittance Costs: Compare Fees, FX Spread, and Settlement Friction
Understand the real cost of transfers, import payments, currency conversion, and delayed settlement.
Why is the advertised transfer fee not the full cost?
The real transfer cost may include the visible fee, exchange-rate spread, receiving charge, intermediary deduction, card or bank fee, and the cost of delayed access to funds. Comparing only the advertised fee can hide the largest part of the transaction cost.
Calculate the effective cost
Compare the total amount paid by the sender with the usable amount received by the beneficiary. Express the difference as both money and a percentage.
Separate fee from FX spread
Ask for the exchange rate applied and compare it with a reasonable reference rate at the same time. The difference may be more expensive than the stated fee.
Include settlement time
A cheaper transfer can still be costly if a business misses inventory, supplier, or payroll deadlines while waiting.
Common mistake
Using different send amounts or different timestamps when comparing providers.
